In today’s world, being prepared to handle emergencies can make the difference between life and death. One of the critical skills that can empower you to save lives is the ability to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The TQual Level 3 Award in Emergency Response focuses on equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills required to effectively use an AED during cardiac emergencies.
An AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. It’s used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson, with clear, step-by-step instructions and audio prompts.
Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Having the skills to use an AED can dramatically increase the survival chances of a cardiac arrest victim. According to the American Heart Association, immediate CPR and AED use can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.
